The Guilt Complex – A Novel

Sandra’s life is turned upside when she comes face to face with Mirco, her ex-boyfriend and the love of her life.
Any hopes of a happy ending vanish when she wakes the next morning to find him brutally murdered.

Twenty-six years old, suffocated by an obsessive, paranoid father, Sandra begins her own investigation into Mirco’s death, only to find herself digging into her own past, unearthing memories she never even knew she had, and uncovering decades of secrets and guilt-fuelled lies.

«Ten minutes later, I was running downstairs, with my gym bag under my arm, my LV Speedy 30 in one hand and my yellow bag-for-life in the other, filled with everything I’d managed to get my hands on in my rage. I hit the street feeling fine. When I got to the corner, I still felt good. Then I opened my purse and realised: it’s dark, it’s cold, it’s the second of February, I’m standing here in leggings, a polo neck sweater and a puffa jacket and I look like a bag lady.»

«They say you can get used to anything (like fuck! is what I say). That your nose stops noticing bad smells. That in only a few minutes it becomes ‘nose blind’. Hey, Nose Expert, come here and do your research, then tell me what you think. So, actually, what you’re smelling isn’t the smell itself, but the olfactory change (in this case, for example, from wet earth to fresh poo) then your nose, or rather the cilia, stop cataloguing the molecules that reach the nose and archive them as already received.»

«Leaving them, before they leave you, is bollocks! The kind of bollocks that, in theory, I’d never do. In theory, because in real life, that’s exactly what I did with Mirco.»

«There are lies and lies. Lies that hurt everyone and lies that don’t. Good lies have a category all of their own, they’re what we call Little White Lies, or LWLs.»
